The Greater Noida Authority is set to commence construction on a crucial underpass at Gaur Chowk, a move aimed at decongesting one of the busiest intersections in Greater Noida West. An official from the authority confirmed that a contractor has been appointed for this significant project, which carries a budget of ₹81.27 crore and is slated for completion within 18 months.
A recent inspection of the underpass site by a team from the Greater Noida Authority and Noida Traffic Police assessed pre-project requirements, including the removal of encroachments and the relocation of electric poles and trees. This preparatory work is essential for the smooth progression of the construction phase. Gaur Chowk is notorious for its traffic snarls, being a critical junction where traffic heading towards the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Crossings Republik, and Greater Noida converges. This congestion is exacerbated by poor infrastructure, illogical turns, and insufficient signage, leading to daily traffic jams for the approximately 400,000 residents of high-rise apartments and neighbouring villages in Greater Noida West.
The urgency of this project has been underscored following the opening of Noida’s Parthala flyover in June last year, which shifted traffic congestion to Gaur Chowk. The new underpass on the Taj Highway will connect Greater Noida to Gaur City and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, intersecting with the proposed Greater Noida West line of the Noida Metro. The underpass will span six lanes and measure 720 metres in length. The project encompasses several phases, starting with the removal of existing encroachments, electric poles, trees, cables, and drains. The construction will also necessitate the creation of service lanes to facilitate traffic movement while the main road undergoes excavation. Residents and local stakeholders have voiced their anticipation for the project’s completion. A resident of Greater Noida West expressed optimism, stating that the underpass will significantly reduce traffic chaos at Gaur Chowk. However, he urged officials to adhere to the project timeline to prevent prolonged disruption caused by diversions around the construction site. The authority has confirmed the development of a service lane to manage traffic during the construction period. The traffic police will be actively present to guide commuters and ensure minimal inconvenience.
