The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is on the horizon as the Maharashtra Ports Department accelerates preparations for a pioneering water taxi service.
This ambitious initiative aims to establish a direct and efficient aquatic link between the iconic Gateway of India and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, significantly reducing road traffic congestion and offering a faster, cleaner, and more efficient travel alternative. The project’s emphasis on utilising electric boats not only underscores a commitment to zero net carbon emissions but also champions eco-friendly urban transport, aligning perfectly with the vision of sustainable and livable cities.
The impetus for this expedited development came during a recent review meeting chaired by Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane at Mantralaya on Monday. Minister Rane issued directives to officials to swiftly formulate detailed plans and submit proposals for the construction of necessary jetties at strategic locations. The core objective is clear: to alleviate the persistent issue of road traffic congestion plaguing the Mumbai-Navi Mumbai corridor and provide commuters with a sustainable and superior travel experience. This move is particularly critical given Mumbai’s status as a coastal metropolis, where water-based transport has long been underutilised despite its immense potential for decongestion and efficiency.
The meeting saw the presence of senior officials, including Additional Chief Secretary of Transport and Ports Department Sanjay Sethi, Navi Mumbai Airport Authority representative Brijesh Singhal, and Maharashtra Maritime Board’s Pradeep Badiye. Minister Rane specifically stressed the importance of phased terminal development and instructed the airport authority to initiate proposals for securing the requisite permissions without delay. Furthermore, he directed officials to identify key future locations for setting up cargo jetties, indicating a long-term vision for integrated water-based logistics that could further de-stress road networks and promote a more efficient supply chain.
Once operational, the proposed water taxi service is projected to dramatically cut travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to a mere 40 minutes. This significant reduction in commute time will offer substantial relief to thousands of daily commuters and provide a more predictable and comfortable alternative to the often-unpredictable road journeys. Crucially, the commitment to deploying electric boats as part of this initiative is a powerful statement towards environmental stewardship.
