In a move set to alleviate longstanding parking woes in Gandhinagar and surrounding areas of Bengaluru’s CBD, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is preparing to inaugurate the much-anticipated multi-level car park (MLCP) at Freedom Park this Thursday. Constructed at a cost of Rs 80 crore and delayed over several years, the facility is poised to accommodate 600 four-wheelers and 750 two-wheelers.
Originally conceptualized to mitigate traffic congestion around the Majestic area, the MLCP faced numerous challenges throughout its decade-long development, including technical specifications and geological obstacles. Despite setbacks, the project finally reached completion in April 2022. BBMP officials highlighted that the private agency, Princeroyal Parking Solution Business Private Limited, has been entrusted with operations following a recent work order. Basic infrastructure enhancements have been finalized to ensure the facility’s readiness for public use. “The agency will contribute Rs 1.5 crore annually to BBMP for the first five years, with a 5% annual increment thereafter, contingent upon satisfactory service,” stated a BBMP official, emphasizing the potential for a five-year contract extension based on performance.
In conjunction with the MLCP’s opening, local traffic authorities have imposed bans on roadside parking along Tank Bund Road, Subedar Chatram Road, and Hospital Road. This measure aims to optimize utilization of the new facility and reduce congestion in the immediate vicinity. “This facility will significantly benefit shoppers frequenting Majestic and Chickpet, legal professionals attending the nearby city civil court, and visitors to government offices housed in MS Buildings, Vidhana Soudha, and Vikasa Soudha,” the official added. With the inauguration pending Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s availability, the BBMP anticipates a positive impact on local traffic flow and convenience for area residents and visitors alike. The MLCP’s introduction marks a pivotal step towards modernizing Bengaluru’s infrastructure and enhancing urban mobility solutions.
