GAIL (Gas Authority of India Ltd.) has made a strategic decision to expedite its target for achieving net zero carbon emissions, advancing the timeline by five years to 2035 from the previously set goal of 2040. This ambitious move was approved by GAIL’s board of directors on Friday, underscoring the company’s proactive stance towards sustainability and alignment with India’s broader commitments to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070.
In a statement, GAIL highlighted the rationale behind this decision, citing an extensive study conducted to enhance its sustainability goals. The revised target aims to address Scope-1 and Scope-2 emissions, encompassing direct emissions from owned or controlled sources and indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy, respectively. To achieve this accelerated goal, GAIL has outlined a series of strategic initiatives. These include the electrification of processes, leveraging renewable energy sources, deploying battery energy storage systems (BESS), promoting the use of compressed biogas (CBG), and exploring opportunities in green hydrogen and carbon dioxide valorization. Additionally, GAIL plans to intensify afforestation efforts as part of its carbon sequestration strategy. By advancing its net zero emissions target, GAIL reinforces its commitment to sustainable development and assumes a leadership role in India’s energy sector transformation. This initiative not only positions GAIL as a leader in environmental stewardship, but it also helps India achieve its ambitious climate goals.
Sandeep Kumar Gupta, chairman and managing director of GAIL, emphasized the role of natural gas in the transition to cleaner energy sources. “GAIL is in the business of marketing and transmission of natural gas, which is a cleaner fuel that aids in reducing emissions of various industries and end-consumers,” Gupta noted. He added that GAIL is actively taking steps within its operations to reduce emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment. The decision to accelerate the net zero carbon goal reflects GAIL’s proactive approach towards mitigating climate change impacts while fostering a sustainable energy future. It underscores the company’s readiness to adapt and innovate in response to evolving environmental challenges and global energy transition trends.
