From Waste Picker to Global Advocate Mumbai’s Sushila Sabe’s Remarkable Journey

Mumbai’s Sushila Sable, a seasoned waste picker, has embarked on a significant journey towards global leadership in waste management.

At 58 years old, Sable’s journey began on April 29th as she travelled to Buenos Aires, accompanied by Marathi translator Ashwini Jog, to contest for the position of vice president of the International Alliance of Waste Pickers (IAWP). Sable’s journey from a humble waste picker at the age of 10 to a global contender for leadership in waste management is a testament to her dedication and perseverance.

Sable’s ascent in the waste management sector began with the formation of small self-help groups. In 1998, she led a group of 10 women waste pickers to establish a self-help group (SHG) with the assistance of the women’s rights organisation Stree Mukti Sanghatana (SMS). Over time, Sable’s leadership skills propelled her to the position of president of Parisar Bhagini Vikas Sangha (PBVS), a trust comprising numerous SHGs with approximately 3,000 waste pickers as members. Additionally, she became a member of the Alliance of Indian Waste Pickers (AIWP).

The International Alliance of Waste Pickers (IAWP) is a significant global platform that unites waste picker organisations from around the world. With 50 member organisations representing nearly 4.6 lakh workers across 34 countries, including 12 from India, the IAWP aims to formalise its structure during its first congress. The gathering will elect key leadership positions, including president, vice president, and treasurer, from among the delegates. Moreover, the alliance is poised to be registered with the International Labour Organization (ILO) in the future. Sable’s nomination for the position of vice president underscores the recognition of her expertise and dedication to the welfare of waste pickers globally. Her journey symbolises the empowerment of marginalised communities and serves as an inspiration for individuals striving for leadership roles in the waste management sector. As Mumbai’s Sushila Sable sets her sights on global leadership, she represents the potential for positive change and advocacy in waste management practices worldwide.
