Fresh Proposals for Thiruvananthapuram Metro

A recent Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) for the proposed Thiruvananthapuram Metro project has recommended implementing a conventional or medium model, drawing inspiration from Kochi Metro. The Kochi Metro Rail, responsible for project implementation, has enlisted the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prepare a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) within the next three months.
This new DPR will undergo scrutiny by the KMR before it is submitted to the state government and subsequently forwarded for final approval at the national level. The revision of the DPR, originally released in 2018, is necessitated by the significant urban developments witnessed in the city over the past five years.
The AAR is currently under consideration by the state government and sources close to KMR indicate that both the government and city corporation are expected to approve the AAR shortly, allowing the KMRL to progress with the next steps.
Previously, there was a proposal to introduce a light Metro or Metro lite system in Thiruvananthapuram. However, the AAR now suggests a medium Metro model, akin to the Kochi Metro. The AAR, finalised and submitted to the KMRL by the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), will pave the way for outlining the alignment and finalising the model for the proposed Metro rail.
The first corridor, spanning 27.4 km, will extend from Technocity (Pallipuram) to Pallichal via Karamana and Nemom. The second corridor, covering 14.7 km, will connect Kazhakootam to Killippalam via Enchakkal, catering to the transportation needs of NH66 bypass commuters. In phase two, there will be additional extension corridors, including one from Pallichal to Neyyattinkara (11.1 km), Technocity to Mangalapuram (3.7 km), and Enchakkal to Vizhinjam (14.7 km).
