Fort Kochi’s Public Space Overhaul What’s New?

The Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML) is poised to significantly enhance urban life in Fort Kochi with the opening of three newly revamped public spaces. These projects are set to bolster connectivity, improve pedestrian access, and offer residents enriched recreational facilities.

The Nehru Park redevelopment, completed at an investment of Rs 2.93 crore, stands as a flagship project. This transformation includes a host of modern amenities such as multi-play stations, slides, climbers, swings, merry-go-rounds, and seesaws. The park now features natural play areas with interactive elements such as mounds, slides, and tunnels, alongside shaded seating around trees. Enhanced safety measures have been incorporated, including defined walkways, comprehensive landscaping, boundary walls, and additional amenities like a feeding block and toilets. According to a CSML spokesperson, these features aim to foster a secure and engaging environment for children and families alike.

The Ro-Ro jetty area has been redesigned to facilitate better vehicle flow and improve connectivity. The new pedestrian-friendly zone includes clearly defined streets, continuous footpaths, and improved access to transit points. This redevelopment also incorporates tree-side seating, stepped seating for optimal space use, and ample lighting to ensure safety and enhance usability during extended hours. Additionally, the area in front of the RD office has also been revamped to create a more inviting public space. CSML plans to further enhance this area with an installation that will complement the new features and contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of Fort Kochi.

In a related development, Kerala’s Chief Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the renovated Changampuzha Park on September 12. Managed by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) with support from CSML, the park has undergone a substantial upgrade at a cost of Rs 4.24 crore. The renovation, which began a year ago, includes modern landscaping and infrastructure improvements. The park will celebrate its reopening with a seven-day cultural programme, reflecting its role as a key cultural hub in Kochi. These initiatives underscore CSML’s commitment to enhancing urban spaces, promoting connectivity, and enriching the quality of life for Kochi’s residents.
