First Trial Run on Noapara-Airport Metro Route Conducted Successfully in Kolkata

Kolkata’s public transport infrastructure is set to receive a significant boost, as the first trial run on the much-awaited Noapara-Airport Metro route was successfully conducted on January 25, 2025. The trial covered a 7.04 km stretch of the Yellow Line, marking an important milestone in the development of this metro extension that is expected to be fully operational by mid-2025.

The route, which will connect Noapara to Jai Hind Biman Bandar (Kolkata Airport), promises to ease commuting for thousands of daily travellers. The trial run, which began at Noapara at 12:09 PM, included stops at Dum Dum Cantonment and Jessore Road before reaching Jai Hind Biman Bandar Metro station at 12:31 PM. The return journey started at 1:57 PM, reaching Noapara at 2:21 PM. The 7.04 km stretch will consist of four stations: Noapara, Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and Jai Hind Biman Bandar. This route will feature a combination of both underground and viaduct sections, with 1.8 km being underground and the remaining 5.23 km elevated on viaducts. Officials are hopeful that the full service will be operational by mid-year, offering a much-needed upgrade to Kolkata’s metro network. The successful trial run is a significant development for Kolkata Metro, with the General Manager of Metro Railway Kolkata, P. Uday Kumar Reddy, present during the test. Speaking about the milestone, Reddy expressed confidence that the metro service would be commissioned on time, offering both enhanced convenience and better connectivity for commuters.

The Noapara-Airport Metro route is poised to provide major advantages to the people of Kolkata, especially those who frequent the airport or live in the northern suburbs. The metro line will drastically reduce travel time, with an efficient, direct connection to the airport, something that has been long awaited by travellers who currently rely on road transport. In addition to airport connectivity, the inclusion of Dum Dum Cantonment and Jessore Road stations offers convenience to residents in the surrounding areas, who will benefit from faster, more reliable access to the city’s metro network. The viaduct and underground sections of the route also mean fewer disruptions to the city’s existing infrastructure, while ensuring smooth travel for passengers. For daily commuters, the Noapara-Airport line will provide an alternative to often congested roadways, alleviating the burden on Kolkata’s roads. The metro will offer a safe, air-conditioned environment with better punctuality, which is crucial for those who depend on public transport to reach work or other important destinations.

The successful trial run is just the beginning of a wider plan to expand Kolkata Metro’s reach. Once operational, this route will form a crucial link in the city’s transport system, providing seamless access from the northern suburbs to the airport. The project has been eagerly awaited by residents, and officials are optimistic that it will ease the daily commute for thousands of passengers. As the metro service progresses towards full operation, further trials and inspections will be conducted to ensure its readiness. This route is set to become a vital part of the Yellow Line, with hopes of boosting the efficiency of public transport in the city. The trial run of the Noapara-Airport Metro route is a promising development for Kolkata, signalling the near arrival of a quicker, more reliable mode of transport that will benefit commuters across the city. Officials are confident that the service will be up and running by mid-2025, offering significant advantages in terms of speed, convenience, and reduced traffic congestion.
