First-Ever Mobile Washrooms for Women in Kandivali
In a groundbreaking move to address the pressing need for hygienic facilities for women, Mumbai has introduced its first-ever mobile bathroom exclusively for women. Inaugurated on January 8 at Hanuman Nagar, Kandivali (East), this facility is a vital step towards improving sanitation in slum areas. The initiative, spearheaded by Cabinet Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha during his tenure as Guardian Minister of Mumbai Suburban District, has been brought to life through the District Planning Committee, with the support of MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar.
This mobile washroom facility is a modern, well-equipped solution tailored to meet the critical hygiene needs of women living in underprivileged areas. The bus contains five bathrooms with showers, a 2,100-litre water tank, basins, and two dryer machines to facilitate laundry needs. Operational for 12 hours daily, the service is designed for efficiency and sustainability, with water usage controlled to minimise waste. Speaking at the launch event, Minister Lodha highlighted the challenges faced by women in slum areas, where access to proper bathing facilities is scarce. “This initiative reflects our commitment to improving women’s hygiene and dignity. We plan to replicate this project in other areas, ensuring that no woman is deprived of basic sanitation facilities,” said Lodha.
The facility is overseen by an all-female staff to ensure proper management. Women are allocated 5-10 minutes for bathing, with an automatic water cutoff system to prevent misuse. A generator-powered system supports its operation, making the service reliable and accessible. This pioneering project not only addresses a crucial gap in urban hygiene but also aligns with the broader vision of a Swachh Bharat. It marks a significant step in empowering women with access to dignified, hygienic, and safe sanitation options. With plans to expand this model across other areas, the initiative is a beacon of hope for underprivileged women, fostering health and well-being in a tangible and impactful manner.
