First Detailed Underwater Check for Bandra-Worli Sea Link in 16 Years

Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link, a symbol of modern engineering, will undergo its first detailed underwater inspection since its inauguration in 2009. The 4.7-kilometre structure, which has been a vital transportation route connecting the western suburbs to the city’s core, will be examined using cutting-edge submersible remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to inspect the submerged portions for any potential damage or deterioration.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced that the inspection process, set to begin after tenders are awarded by January 25, will be completed within six months. The estimated cost for this comprehensive inspection is approximately ₹7 crore. Unlike previous assessments, where the toll collection agency carried out inspections, MSRDC has decided to appoint a separate agency for this task, signifying the growing emphasis on maintaining the Sea Link’s structural health. The inspection will utilize the latest technology, including high-definition cameras on the ROVs, to capture clear images of the submerged components of the sea link, enabling experts to identify any cracks, defects, or signs of wear. In the past, scuba divers were employed for inspections, but this new methodology promises a far more advanced approach, providing more accurate and detailed data for analysis.

The divers, however, are expected to continue their role in clearing marine growth from the piers to ensure clear visuals during the process. The Sea Link is supported by 179 foundation piers, each carefully designed to ensure stability against Mumbai’s coastal environment. The upcoming inspection will also include non-destructive testing techniques, scour surveys, and ultrasonic thickness measurements for the steel elements of the structure. This proactive move reflects the MSRDC’s commitment to preserving one of Mumbai’s most iconic engineering landmarks, which has stood the test of time for nearly 16 years. By identifying and addressing any potential structural issues, the authorities aim to extend the longevity of the Sea Link and continue providing a vital transport route for the city’s commuters, safeguarding the bridge’s future for years to come.
