Firozpur expands long-distance train services to strengthen interstate links
Firozpur’s railway network has received a major boost with the introduction of several new long-distance and daily trains, reconnecting important religious and regional hubs such as Nanded, Haridwar, and Mohali. These services aim to improve accessibility for pilgrims and commuters, reducing dependence on multiple transfer routes via Ludhiana or Amritsar. Managed by the Northern Railway’s Firozpur Division, the new services are expected to strengthen regional mobility and bolster Punjab’s connectivity to neighbouring states.
One of the most notable additions is the Firozpur Cantt–Hazur Sahib Nanded Weekly Express, which began operating in mid-June. This train connects Punjab directly with Hazur Sahib Nanded, one of Sikhism’s sacred Takhts, in Maharashtra. Running once a week, the train provides long-distance pilgrims with sleeper and AC coaches for a more direct and comfortable travel experience. Another key service now operational is the Firozpur–Haridwar Weekly Express, offering overnight connectivity to Uttarakhand’s revered pilgrimage destination. This train eliminates the need for detours through other major junctions, streamlining travel for religious tourists. In addition to these services, Firozpur has re-established daily connectivity with Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) after a hiatus of more than four years. Two trains, including the Sutlej Express and Chandigarh–Firozpur Cantt Express, now cover the 236-kilometre route daily. Both trains use general unreserved coaches, providing an affordable transit solution for daily commuters and budget travellers across Punjab’s expanding urban centres.
Plans are underway to further extend Firozpur’s reach, with the Intercity Superfast Express—previously running between Moga and Delhi—set to originate from Firozpur in the near future. Once operational, this service will add vital fast-track rail access to the national capital. While awaiting implementation, this development is seen as a positive step toward establishing Firozpur as a key junction in Northern India’s passenger train network. Experts suggest these services will not only facilitate pilgrimage and tourism but also help decongest travel routes through Ludhiana and Amritsar, which were previously the only viable long-distance links. Railway authorities are also considering infrastructure upgrades to accommodate growing demand, with suggestions to add chair cars and AC coaches on daily trains. The Firozpur Railway Division continues to balance freight and passenger needs while enabling economic and cultural exchange. These train enhancements align with broader efforts to strengthen border region infrastructure in Punjab through sustainable, low-cost public transit options.
The introduction and resumption of long-distance and daily trains from Firozpur reflect a significant step toward improving rail-based mobility in Punjab. With direct links to religious hubs and key urban centres, residents and pilgrims alike now enjoy greater convenience, affordability, and speed. These developments not only address past connectivity gaps but also pave the way for further integration with national transit corridors. As plans for additional services progress, Firozpur is poised to become a more prominent node in Northern India’s railway network, offering regional development and passenger convenience through targeted rail expansion strategies.
