Ex-Pilot Weighs In on Mumbai Airport Runway Mishap

In response to a recent viral video capturing two aircraft simultaneously on the runway at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai, a retired pilot and aviation industry veteran provided valuable insights into the incident. The retired pilot expressed concerns about the incident and highlighted the potential factors contributing to it. He noted that while the viral video might not accurately depict the separation between the aircraft due to the angle of videography, having two aircraft on the same runway is a serious mistake. He emphasized that according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations, clear weather conditions may allow for less separation between aircraft, but simultaneous presence on the runway is still impermissible.

Furthermore, he explained the concept of High Intensity Runway Operation (HIRO) implemented in airports with significant air traffic congestion. HIRO involves procedures to maximize runway capacity and safety, particularly during peak hours, by optimizing runway usage.

Addressing the root causes of airport congestion, the expert pointed out issues such as excessive slot allocation and poor slot adherence by airlines. He highlighted the challenges faced by air traffic controllers when aircraft arrive earlier than the approved slot time, leading to congestion and delays for other scheduled flights.

Citing an analysis by the Airports Authority of India, he underscored the importance of efficient slot management to alleviate congestion and ensure smooth airport operations. The analysis identified early aircraft arrivals as a significant contributor to traffic congestion, affecting the overall schedule adherence and causing delays. Overall, the expert’s insights shed light on the complexities of airport operations and the importance of adherence to safety protocols and efficient management practices to prevent such incidents in the future.
