EPIP Substation Maintenance To Affect Bengaluru Electricity

Several technology and industrial hubs across Bengaluru are set to experience intermittent electricity disruptions for 17 days starting January 3, as maintenance work is carried out at the 220/66/11 kV EPIP substation. The scheduled retrofilling of a 31.5 MVA power transformer is intended to enhance long-term reliability and ensure uninterrupted supply to the city’s rapidly growing industrial and IT corridors.

The maintenance is expected to impact multiple IT parks, commercial establishments, industrial zones, and adjacent residential areas. Key sites likely to face temporary outages include L&T, RMZ Next, Ragihalli–Siddapura Gate, EPIP Layout, TCS Software, SJR Tech Park, Reliance (Big Bazaar), Oriental Hotel, Airtel, Bushra Tech Park, Gopalan Enterprises, Sada Tech Park, Qualcomm facilities, GE BE Company, and Bagmane Neon Block. Additional coverage extends to the EPIP Industrial Area and nearby localities.Authorities have clarified that the outages will be intermittent, corresponding to specific stages of the transformer maintenance, rather than a continuous power cut. Residents, businesses, and service providers have been advised to plan operations, backup systems, and activities to mitigate disruption, particularly in high-dependency sectors such as IT services, data centers, and manufacturing units.

Urban energy experts note that Bengaluru’s dependence on concentrated power infrastructure in industrial corridors underscores both the city’s economic dynamism and vulnerability to service interruptions. Temporary disruptions, though inconvenient, are necessary to maintain equipment integrity, avoid unscheduled outages, and ensure safe and efficient energy distribution in the medium and long term. The planned maintenance highlights the importance of resilient urban infrastructure planning in fast-growing cities. IT parks and industrial clusters in Bengaluru serve as critical nodes for national and international supply chains, and coordinated maintenance scheduling with clear communication to stakeholders is essential to limit economic impact. Analysts also suggest that integrating smart grid technologies and advanced monitoring at substations can reduce future downtime and improve real-time response during maintenance activities.

Public authorities have assured that work will be completed within the stipulated timeframe, with measures in place to minimise inconvenience to businesses and residents. While temporary power interruptions may affect productivity, experts see this as an investment in infrastructure reliability that supports the city’s long-term energy security and economic sustainability. For companies and residents in affected areas, adopting temporary backup solutions, staggered operational planning, and early awareness of maintenance schedules will be crucial in maintaining normal operations during the 17-day window.
