Electric Ferry Service Connecting Mumbai to JN Port Launches in January

In a significant step towards sustainable and efficient transport, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has announced the launch of electric ferry services connecting Mumbai with Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP), set to commence in January 2025. This new initiative is part of JNPA’s “Harit Sagar” or “Green Port” project, which aims to reduce the port’s environmental footprint and offer a more eco-friendly mode of transport for passengers.

The electric ferries, built using fibre-reinforced polymer, are designed to provide both comfort and sustainability. The vessels, measuring between 12 to 15 metres, will be able to accommodate 20 to 24 passengers with air-conditioned seating, offering a smooth and enjoyable journey. The ferries will operate at a speed of 12 knots, allowing passengers to complete the journey between Mumbai and JNP 20 minutes faster than current options. One of the key advantages of the electric ferry service is its minimal environmental impact, with zero emissions during operation. This aligns with the broader goal of promoting green transportation solutions within the maritime industry. Each ferry is capable of operating for up to three hours on a single charge, with a recharge time of just 75 minutes, ensuring continuous service throughout the day.

Tickets for the ferry rides will be managed by JNPA through an online booking system, making it convenient for passengers to plan their trips. The ferries will run from the Gateway of India to JNP under regular conditions, and during the monsoon or foul weather season, they will operate from Bhaucha Dhakka to JNP, ensuring reliable connectivity year-round. This new electric ferry service marks a progressive move towards reducing Mumbai’s carbon footprint and enhancing its transport infrastructure. The launch of this service will not only offer passengers a faster and greener travel option but also contribute to the growing trend of sustainable urban mobility in India. With the support of the Green Port initiative, JNPA is setting an example of how the maritime industry can embrace innovative technologies for a cleaner, more efficient future.
