Efforts to expand Mumbai’s electric AC double-decker fleet have hit a roadblock, with no new introductions reported in recent months despite growing demand.
The existing fleet of e-AC double-deckers has remained stagnant at 50 buses for over four months, leaving commuters clamoring for increased availability of these spacious and eco-friendly vehicles. Commuters laud the comfort and efficiency of e-AC double-deckers but express frustration over their limited availability, particularly during peak hours when buses run at full capacity. Demand for additional twin-deck buses persists, with commuters advocating for their deployment on new routes to alleviate overcrowding and enhance commuting convenience.
Calls for the revival of double-decker services on discontinued routes echo sentiments of long-time passengers who appreciate the superior carrying capacity and cost-effectiveness of these larger vehicles. Former committee members highlight the potential profitability of double-deckers for the cash-strapped Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, emphasizing their ability to accommodate up to 80 passengers per trip during rush hour. In response to demands for expansion, the private contractor responsible for supplying e-AC double-deckers cites regulatory hurdles as a primary impediment. A spokesperson from Switch Mobility, the contractor, explains that a regulatory change mandated by the central government in April 2023, requiring modifications for electronic vehicle stability control systems, has significantly increased manufacturing costs and operational challenges.
Acknowledging the contractual obligation to fulfill the tender agreement, the contractor has initiated discussions with BEST authorities to address the issue and explore potential solutions. However, the implementation of regulatory-mandated changes necessitates a reevaluation of manufacturing processes and cost implications, underscoring the complexities of navigating regulatory compliance in the electric vehicle sector. As stakeholders navigate these challenges, commuters await the resolution of regulatory hurdles and the anticipated expansion of Mumbai’s electric AC double-decker fleet to meet growing demand and enhance urban mobility infrastructure.
