Electric Cab Registrations in Delhi Surge 15-Fold in 5 Years

The streets of Delhi are witnessing a remarkable surge in the popularity of electric cabs, with government data revealing a staggering 15-fold increase in the number of electric cab registrations in the capital over the past five years.

Simultaneously, registrations of petrol, CNG, diesel and hybrid cabs have witnessed a substantial decline. This shift highlights the growing preference for electric vehicles (EVs) among cab operators and the positive impact of various contributing factors.

In 2018, electric cabs accounted for a mere 1.81 percent of the total registered cabs in Delhi. However, as of 2022, their presence skyrocketed to nearly 50 percent. This exponential growth is attributed to a confluence of factors that have collectively fueled the adoption of electric cabs in the city.

Escalating fuel prices have served as a significant driver, compelling cab operators to seek alternatives to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles. Electric cabs provide a cost-effective solution, with lower operating expenses and reduced reliance on fluctuating fuel costs.

Government subsidies and incentives have also played a pivotal role in the surge of electric cab registrations. By offering financial benefits, tax breaks and attractive subsidies, the government has incentivised cab operators to transition to cleaner and greener electric vehicles. These incentives have made EVs more economically viable, encouraging operators to embrace sustainable transportation.

The expansion of charging infrastructure has further facilitated the widespread adoption of electric cabs. Delhi has witnessed a remarkable growth in the availability of charging stations across the city, ensuring that EV owners have convenient access to charging facilities.

Cab companies, recognizing the potential of electric mobility, have eagerly embraced the transition to electric cabs, positioning themselves as early adopters in an emerging sector. By capitalising on the market demand for eco-friendly transportation, these companies have not only reduced their carbon footprint but also demonstrated their commitment to sustainable practices.

The surge in electric cab registrations in Delhi signals a promising shift towards sustainable transportation and a greener future for the city. With the combination of rising fuel costs, government incentives, improved charging infrastructure and the proactive involvement of cab companies, the dominance of electric cabs on the streets of Delhi is poised to continue its upward trajectory.
