Electric Buses to Bridge Metro Gap

The long-awaited Metro train project in Bhopal and Indore continues to linger in uncertainty. Despite ongoing efforts, the timeline for the project’s completion and operational commencement remains unclear. “Our desire is that the Metro train should commence operations soon in Indore and Bhopal,” stated MP Finance Minister Jagdish Devda, without providing further specifics on the expected timeline.

The indefinite wait for the Metro, the state government has announced the procurement of 552 electric buses to enhance urban mobility. This initiative, supported by the union government, will see these buses operating across six cities: Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Ujjain, and Sagar. However, sources indicate that the actual deployment of these buses might take some time, despite the pre-election announcement.

The state budget has allocated a significant sum of Rs 1,200 crore for the enhancement and development of urban infrastructure. Under the Infrastructure Development Scheme, Rs 1,100 crore has been earmarked, while the Chief Minister’s Infrastructure Development Scheme has been allotted Rs 1,700 crore. Additionally, urban bodies will receive Rs 1,111 crore for basic services in the fiscal year 2024-25, marking an increase of Rs 269 crore compared to the previous fiscal year. In total, a provision of Rs 16,744 crore has been made for urban development in the year 2024-25, reflecting an increase of Rs 1,836 crore over the previous year’s allocation. The most substantial portion of this budget, Rs 4,000 crore, is dedicated to the PM Housing for All Scheme, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing housing needs.

While the Metro project remains in a state of anticipation, the introduction of electric buses is expected to provide a much-needed boost to urban transportation in the interim. These buses are not only aimed at improving connectivity but also at reducing the environmental footprint of public transport. The delay in the Metro project underscores the complexities and challenges in urban infrastructure development. However, the state’s proactive approach in deploying electric buses showcases its commitment to improving urban mobility and infrastructure. The coming months will reveal how effectively these initiatives will bridge the gap left by the delayed Metro project and cater to the transportation needs of the urban populace.
