Electric Bus Link to Jewar Starts Soon

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will launch an electric bus service connecting three of the Capital’s major Inter State Bus Terminals (ISBTs) with the Noida International Airport (NIA) region in Jewar by the end of May.

This step comes even as the airport itself is expected to miss its original operational deadline of mid-May.According to officials, the electric buses will ply from Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar, and Sarai Kale Khan ISBTs, and serve commuters in Greater Noida and Jewar. These areas, which have long required robust public transport options, will benefit from a green mobility corridor even before the airport becomes operational. The new service is expected to ease travel between Delhi and the rapidly developing airport zone, aligning with broader goals of low-emission, high-accessibility public transport infrastructure.

Air-conditioned, low-floor electric buses will be deployed for the route. Designed with commuter comfort and safety in mind, these buses feature broad aisles to accommodate luggage, reserved seating for women, and are equipped with CCTV cameras, panic buttons, and GPS-based tracking systems. The rollout will be on a pilot basis with the possibility of future scaling, depending on demand. While the final routes and fare structures are still being firmed up, officials are working in coordination with the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida), which manages the Jewar zone. One stretch of the proposed route—a four-kilometre patch—is pending development, and DTC has sought clarity from Yeida on its readiness. Despite these minor logistical hurdles, the department is confident of launching the service within the month.

The move is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between DTC and the NIA authority in March, underscoring a long-term vision of integrated, electric-first transit connectivity between Delhi and its extended urban periphery.
While the Noida International Airport, developed by Zurich Airport International AG, is still undergoing final construction, the proposed connectivity is already shaping up as a critical prelude to the larger economic and infrastructural transformation that the airport promises to bring. Once completed, the airport is expected to handle over 1.2 crore passengers annually and become one of India’s largest cargo and passenger aviation hubs.

Urban mobility analysts view the electric bus linkage not merely as a commuter convenience but as a much-needed signal of future-forward planning—offering climate-conscious, affordable, and safe transportation to an expanding metro region. With Delhi’s increasing emphasis on electric vehicles and clean transport alternatives, the service could become a model for intercity electric bus operations across India’s major transport corridors.By launching services in advance of the airport’s operational timeline, DTC is not just pre-empting demand—it is helping create it, ensuring that the infrastructure around one of India’s most anticipated airports begins to serve people well before the first flight takes off.
