Lucknow’s Akbarnagar is poised for a significant transformation with the launch of a comprehensive afforestation initiative aimed at revitalizing the Kukrail river area. Spearheaded by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) with an investment of Rs 10 crore, this ambitious project will see the planting of 20 lakh saplings across 25 acres recently cleared of illegal encroachments.
Inspired by the ecological principles of the late Japanese ecologist Akira Miyawaki, the initiative aims not only to beautify the landscape but also to foster a sustainable habitat. Municipal commissioner Inderjit Singh highlighted that the forestation efforts will introduce a diverse array of native plant species, including neem, mango, banyan, peepal, Indian gooseberry, and pakad. These species are selected for their ability to thrive in the local climate and contribute to biodiversity conservation. Central to the Miyawaki method adopted for this project is the dense planting of seedlings at a rate of three per square meter. This approach mimics natural forest ecosystems, accelerating growth and fostering competition among plants for sunlight and nutrients. Singh emphasized that meticulous care, including weed removal over the initial three years, will ensure the saplings’ successful establishment before allowing the forest to mature naturally.

Experts from the geology department at Lucknow University underscored that the new forest along the Kukrail river will enhance ecological resilience by stabilizing riverbanks, improving water quality through natural filtration, and providing a habitat for diverse wildlife.
