In a disturbing incident of environmental vandalism, at least 41 trees were discovered either axed or poisoned along the Eastern Express Highway in Ghatkopar East.
The Pant Nagar police have taken swift action by registering a case based on a complaint filed by Krishna Lambe, a member of the garden unit within the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), under various sections of the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. According to reports, the garden department of the BMC noticed the damage during routine inspections. The affected area spans from the junction of the Andheri-Jogeshwari Link Road to Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar East. The damage includes the felling of 22 Foxtail palm trees on the divider and the poisoning of 16 Peltophorum trees, 2 Subabul trees, and one Peepal tree opposite the Petrol Pump near Naidu Colony. The method used to harm the trees is particularly concerning, with holes drilled into them and chemicals poured inside, leading to the loss of leaves and eventual death of the trees. The motive behind this act remains unclear, although authorities suspect that it could be related to illegal wood theft.
Law enforcement officials are actively investigating the case and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators. While tree poisoning incidents are not uncommon, especially in cases involving private properties, the fact that these trees were situated beside a public road raises questions about the motive behind the vandalism. Environmental activists and concerned citizens have expressed outrage over the incident, emphasising the need for stricter enforcement of laws protecting trees and harsh penalties for offenders. Such acts of environmental destruction not only harm the ecosystem but also impact the aesthetic and environmental quality of the community. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding green spaces and preserving the natural environment for future generations. It calls for increased vigilance and collective efforts to combat environmental crimes and ensure the protection of trees and greenery in urban areas.
