Bengaluru is on the brink of a significant transportation upgrade with the construction of the Eastern Connectivity Tunnel, a vital infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The tunnel is expected to provide a direct and efficient route linking Whitefield, Sarjapur, and Mahadevapura with the airport, which will not only slash travel time by up to 30 minutes but also alleviate pressure on Bengaluru’s notorious traffic hotspots. The ambitious ₹16,500 crore project is a part of Bangalore International Airport Limited’s (BIAL) expansion plan to accommodate the growing aviation demands of the city.
Currently, commuters heading to KIA often face delays due to the heavy congestion at key junctions, particularly the Hebbal flyover. The new tunnel aims to divert approximately 30% of the airport-bound traffic, relieving bottlenecks on these critical routes. With construction slated to begin this year and complete within three years, the tunnel is set to be a game-changer for daily commuters, offering a faster and more reliable journey to the airport.
Hari Marar, CEO of BIAL, emphasised the tunnel’s role in improving traffic flow, stating that it will be instrumental in reducing travel time and enhancing the overall airport experience. As Bengaluru’s population continues to grow, the need for sustainable urban mobility solutions becomes more pressing. The Eastern Connectivity Tunnel is expected to be a key enabler in maintaining the city’s economic dynamism by reducing congestion and providing a smoother connection between the airport and the eastern suburbs.
