A significant development in Delhi’s infrastructure, the newly constructed 2.5-kilometre tunnel on the Dwarka Expressway is set to improve connectivity between the National Capital Region (NCR) and Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The tunnel, which opens today, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and streamline travel for commuters. Initially, the tunnel will be accessible daily from 12 PM to 3 PM. This limited timeframe allows authorities to monitor traffic patterns and assess the tunnel’s impact on overall flow. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in collaboration with Delhi and Gurugram traffic police, has conducted thorough inspections to ensure safety and efficiency before the partial opening. To maintain smooth traffic and ensure safety within the tunnel, certain vehicles will be restricted during the initial phase.
Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, tractors with trolleys, and water or gas tankers will not be permitted. These measures are temporary and subject to review based on traffic assessments. This tunnel is part of the broader Dwarka Expressway project, which spans approximately 29.6 kilometres and is being developed at an estimated cost of ₹9,000 crore. The expressway is designed to decongest the NH-48 corridor between Delhi and Gurugram, facilitating smoother inter-state traffic movement. Once fully operational, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Manesar and Palam Airport to approximately 30 minutes.
The completion of this tunnel marks a significant milestone in enhancing urban mobility within the NCR. As the expressway nears full operational status, it is anticipated to spur economic growth, improve real estate prospects, and contribute to sustainable urban development by reducing travel time and associated emissions. Commuters are encouraged to plan their travel during the designated hours and adhere to the vehicle restrictions to ensure a smooth and safe journey through the new tunnel.
