Dombivli Adopts Chennai Waste Management Model

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated several projects in Dombivli on Sunday, including the adoption of the “Chennai Pattern” for waste management.

This initiative marks Maharashtra’s first implementation of this model, aiming to transform Dombivli into a garbage-free city. The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has partnered with organizations like Sumit Elkoplast, known for their expertise in implementing the Garbage-Free City initiative, to oversee waste collection and transportation planning. The newly launched solid waste management system includes the deployment of 350 vehicles and the engagement of 1,200 personnel for city cleaning, all operating under the guidance of KDMC’s Solid Waste Management Department. The project covers Wards D, E, F, G, H, I, and J, with modern systems for waste collection and transportation being implemented to ensure cleanliness and hygiene.

In addition to waste management, several other development projects were inaugurated. A 3-acre garden in Titwala was developed, featuring 3,500 newly planted trees, contributing to the city’s green cover. Furthermore, flats were distributed to residents relocated due to infrastructure development, including the Kalyan-Titwala Ring Road and the Kalyan-Badlapur railway track expansion. These initiatives aim to enhance the living standards of the affected residents. A significant highlight was the foundation stone laying ceremony for a Rs 197-crore skill development centre at MIDC, Dombivli. The centre, a collaboration between Tata Technologies, KDMC, and MIDC, will serve as a hub for innovation and training. Spanning 21,500 square feet, the facility aims to train approximately 7,000 youth annually in areas such as artificial intelligence, drone manufacturing, engineering, operations, and technician roles, thereby fostering skill development and employment opportunities.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the government’s commitment to fulfilling promises made under the Ladki Bahin Yojana, assuring that all initiatives under the scheme would be implemented gradually. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to bring a wave of development to Kalyan-Dombivli, aiming to make the region one of the cleanest and most developed in the country. These initiatives reflect a concerted effort by the Maharashtra government to promote sustainable urban development, enhance waste management practices, and provide skill development opportunities for the youth, aligning with the broader vision of creating eco-friendly and equitable cities.
