DMRC to Design Indore-Ujjain Metro Blueprints

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been entrusted with the task of preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for two significant metro rail corridors in Madhya Pradesh. These corridors will connect Indore with Ujjain and Pithampur, covering a total estimated distance of 84 kilometres. This initiative marks a crucial step towards enhancing the region’s public transport infrastructure and addressing the growing mobility needs of its population.

According to an official statement, the DMRC will provide technical consultancy for the development of these metro rail corridors. The first phase will involve the preparation of a DPR for a line connecting the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain to the Nanakheda Bus Stand, and further extending to Lavkush Chauraha in Indore. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited has officially issued a letter commissioning DMRC’s involvement in this project, signifying a pivotal moment in the planning and development of the metro network in the region.

This metro project is part of a broader vision to improve urban mobility in Madhya Pradesh. The state government had previously announced the metro rail line between Indore and Ujjain, with a specific focus on enhancing connectivity ahead of the 2028 Simhastha, a major Hindu congregation held once every 12 years in Ujjain. The Simhastha event is expected to attract millions of visitors, making efficient transportation infrastructure critical for managing the influx of people.

The Indore-Ujjain and Indore-Pithampur metro corridors are poised to revolutionise public transport in the state, offering a faster, more reliable alternative to road travel. The project will not only reduce travel time but also alleviate traffic congestion and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing vehicular emissions. In addition to the planned metro corridors, Madhya Pradesh is already witnessing advancements in its metro infrastructure. The trial run of the first phase of the metro rail in Bhopal was successfully completed in October last year, with plans for the second and third phases underway. Meanwhile, construction work is progressing on a 31-kilometre metro line in Indore, highlighting the state’s commitment to expanding its urban transport network.

The involvement of DMRC, known for its expertise in metro rail projects across India, brings a high level of credibility and experience to the project. As the DPR is developed, it will provide detailed insights into the technical and financial aspects of the proposed corridors, laying the groundwork for subsequent phases of implementation. The development of these metro corridors is expected to significantly boost the region’s connectivity, fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for residents. As Madhya Pradesh continues to modernise its transport infrastructure, the collaboration with DMRC marks a forward-looking approach to sustainable urban development.
