The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to significantly improve last-mile connectivity for commuters with the addition of 1,100 electric autos (e-autos) to its existing fleet of electric three-wheelers. This move comes as part of DMRC’s ongoing efforts to enhance convenience and accessibility for passengers traveling to and from metro stations across the national capital.
Currently, e-autos are operational from several key metro stations including Chhatarpur, Dwarka, Rohini, and northwest Delhi. The Transport Department has already issued 2,299 permits for e-autos, with 1,183 vehicles already registered. By the end of August, an additional 1,116 e-autos, comprising 779 general and 337 for women, are expected to be fully registered and operational. According to DMRC officials, these e-autos will be stationed at approximately 40 metro stations equipped with charging infrastructure and designated parking areas. This strategic deployment aims to cater to the diverse commuting needs of metro passengers, ensuring seamless connectivity from stations to nearby residential, commercial, and educational hubs.
Speaking on the importance of last-mile connectivity, the officials of DMRC emphasized the critical role these e-autos will play in enhancing commuter experience. He acknowledged the recent introduction of bus services by the Delhi government to supplement last-mile connectivity efforts, but noted that the flexibility and maneuverability of e-autos make them better suited for navigating the city’s diverse metro station environments. Highlighting the operational strategy, DMRC officials outlined collaborative arrangements with private operators who will supply and manage the e-autos as per DMRC’s operational standards. This partnership ensures that the e-autos adhere to rigorous safety and service protocols while efficiently serving metro commuters across the network.
