The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has issued an urgent advisory to the public, urging them to refrain from flying kites near elevated Metro lines, particularly as the Independence Day celebrations approach. The warning is part of DMRC’s efforts to ensure passenger safety and prevent any disruptions in Metro services caused by kite-related incidents.
The advisory highlights the significant risks associated with kite flying near the Metro’s 25,000-volt overhead equipment (OHE). Any contact between a kite string and the OHE could not only prove fatal but also result in the tripping or damaging of the Metro’s power supply system, leading to potential service disruptions. “As kite flying will start to gather pace around Independence Day, there is a high likelihood of kite strings getting entangled in OHE wires or getting stuck in the pantograph [equipment that draws power from the OHE] of a moving train if flown near elevated Metro lines,” stated the Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC.
The statement further elaborated on the dangers posed by metallic manjha, a common material used in kite strings. Such material can cause significant damage to the Metro’s power systems and pose a deadly threat to individuals flying kites in close proximity to the elevated tracks. DMRC has identified these risks as critical, particularly during periods when kite flying is at its peak. To mitigate these risks, DMRC has announced that dedicated teams will be stationed near stations identified as kite-prone areas. These teams will be responsible for promptly removing any kite strings spotted near the elevated lines. In addition, Metro train operators and station staff have been advised to exercise increased caution during this period, with specific instructions on how to respond to any kite-related incidents.
