Digi Yatra Reaches 15 Million Downloads, Targets 80 Percent Air Travellers by 2028
India’s DigiYatra platform has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 15 million application downloads, underscoring its transformative potential for the airport experience. This biometric-enabled, contactless system is poised to revolutionise air travel for millions of passengers, ensuring privacy-first, efficient, and hassle-free movement through Indian airports. The soaring adoption rates highlight a pivotal shift towards digital integration in aviation, aligning with the nation’s vision for smart, sustainable, and equitable urban connectivity.
Since its inception in December 2022, DigiYatra has facilitated over 60 million frictionless journeys, seamlessly integrating advanced facial authentication technology across 24 airports nationwide. This rapid expansion and high utilisation rate demonstrate the platform’s robust capabilities and growing acceptance among air travellers. With an impressive average of 30,000 daily app downloads, the platform is projected to reach 16.5 million downloads by August 2025, setting new benchmarks in digital travel innovation and solidifying its position as a trusted companion for millions of commuters.
The platform’s success is rooted in its self-sovereign identity (SSI) based ecosystem, which prioritises user privacy while delivering unparalleled efficiency. By leveraging facial authentication, DigiYatra significantly reduces processing times at various airport touchpoints, from entry gates to boarding. This streamlined process not only enhances passenger convenience but also contributes to operational efficiencies for airport authorities and airlines, leading to quicker turnaround times and potentially lower carbon footprints associated with airport operations, thereby supporting eco-friendly urban development.
Looking ahead, DigiYatra has ambitious targets, aiming to serve nearly 80 per cent of domestic air travellers in India by 2028, a substantial increase from the current 30-35 per cent. To achieve this, strategic integrations with airlines and online travel agencies are being explored to further streamline processes, such as boarding pass sharing. Initiatives like the ‘d-KYC’ campaign and expansion into Tier-II airports have been instrumental in broadening the platform’s reach, connecting with a wider and more diverse audience across the country.
The platform is set for further expansion, with plans to introduce its biometric-based system at four additional airports in the coming months, including Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru, and Srinagar. Furthermore, in a move to enhance inclusivity and accessibility, DigiYatra is rolling out support for all 22 official Indian languages, enabling passengers to navigate airport processes in their preferred language. The upcoming ‘DigiYatra 2.0’, currently in testing, promises enhanced functionality and the potential for international travel support, pending coordination with global regulatory bodies. Through strategic collaborations with international aviation bodies, the platform is aligning with global standards to facilitate smoother international travel, cementing India’s position as a leader in digital aviation. This comprehensive approach ensures that air travel remains accessible, secure, and efficient for all citizens, fostering gender-neutral and equitable access to national and international connectivity.
