Deutsche Bahn to Expand Namo Bharat RRTS with Two New Projects in India
German rail transport giant Deutsche Bahn (DB) is set to expand its footprint in India’s rapidly growing infrastructure sector. The company, which currently manages the operation and maintenance of the first regional rapid transit system (RRTS) in India—Namo Bharat—is eyeing at least two more major projects in the country over the next five years. These projects will focus on both the RRTS and metro rail systems, further cementing DB’s role in shaping the future of urban mobility in India.
In an interview with Businessline, Niko Warbanoff, Chief Executive of DB E.C.O. Group, revealed that the expansion of the Namo Bharat system remains a top priority for the company, with a focus on extending transport corridors around the National Capital Region (NCR). The planned expansions aim to enhance multimodal connectivity and address the growing demand for efficient, fast, and reliable transport systems in urban areas.
“We are not here just for one project. I am keen to expand our business and contribute to India’s infrastructure development with our expertise,” Warbanoff said. He underscored the significance of RRTS projects in enhancing connectivity, stating that these systems are crucial for integrating different transport modes, such as metros and buses, to create a seamless and efficient network for passengers. RRTS, with its long-distance connectivity, complements short-distance metro systems, making it easier for commuters to travel across urban and suburban areas. Currently, Deutsche Bahn operates a 55-kilometre stretch of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS, which will expand to 82 kilometres later this year. This project has already revolutionised travel between these cities, reducing travel time from two to three hours to just 40 minutes. Warbanoff pointed out that the improved efficiency has been a major advantage for passengers, allowing them to access work, education, and other opportunities more quickly and conveniently.
The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS project was inaugurated in October 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to modernise its transport infrastructure. Deutsche Bahn International Operations, a subsidiary of DB E.C.O. Group, secured a ₹1,493.08 crore, 12-year contract from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) to manage the operations of this ambitious project. As part of this agreement, DB plans to operate 40 RRTS trains across the network, ensuring smooth and efficient services for the millions of commuters who will rely on the system. India’s growing focus on urban mobility has made infrastructure projects like RRTS, metro systems, and multimodal transport networks a top priority for both the central and state governments. These initiatives are seen as crucial for addressing the country’s rapidly urbanising population, providing better access to education, employment, and healthcare, while also contributing to the broader economic and social development goals.
Deutsche Bahn’s involvement in India is not just about providing rail transport solutions; it’s about creating a sustainable, integrated transport ecosystem that aligns with the country’s development objectives. The expansion of the Namo Bharat RRTS, along with future projects, demonstrates DB’s long-term commitment to improving urban mobility in India and its willingness to collaborate with Indian authorities to build a modern, efficient transport network that can serve the needs of millions of people. As the Indian government continues to prioritise infrastructure development and urban mobility, Deutsche Bahn’s strategic expansion plans will help shape the future of transportation in India. The company’s expertise and experience will be vital in ensuring that these projects not only meet current demands but are also scalable for future growth, contributing to India’s journey towards a more connected, sustainable, and economically prosperous future.
