Dengue Alert Construction Sites in Candolim Warned

Calangute: The Candolim primary health centre (PHC) has issued show cause notices to two construction sites, demanding an explanation within five days as to why their construction licences should not be revoked for failing to implement adequate measures against vector-borne diseases. The PHC has already disconnected electricity connections and revoked the health no-objection certificates (NOC) for these sites on Wednesday.

A health officer from the PHC explained that the action was taken due to non-compliance with the conditions outlined in the NOC regarding the control of vector-borne diseases. Construction sites are frequently identified as significant danger zones for dengue and malaria, primarily because stagnant water in storage tanks and pits provides ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. It is imperative for all construction workers to obtain health cards immediately upon arrival at the site. This necessitates a health check-up at the PHC. Failure to comply with this requirement can lead to the revocation of permissions to operate. Last month, the PHC had issued a substantial number of show cause notices to construction sites and houses identified as mosquito breeding hotspots.

The decision to target construction sites stems from the urgent need to control the spread of dengue and malaria, which pose serious public health risks. Vector-borne diseases such as these thrive in environments where stagnant water is prevalent, making construction sites particularly vulnerable. The PHC’s proactive measures underscore the importance of stringent health and safety protocols at construction sites. By ensuring that these sites adhere to the necessary precautions, the PHC aims to mitigate the risk of vector-borne diseases. The disconnection of electricity and revocation of health NOCs serve as significant deterrents, compelling construction companies to prioritise health and safety.

This approach is not just about enforcement but also about raising awareness among construction workers and site managers about the critical importance of preventing mosquito breeding. Regular health check-ups and the issuance of health cards are vital components of this strategy, ensuring that workers are healthy and sites are safe.
