Delhi’s upscale Vasant Kunj neighborhood, particularly near Sector D6, is grappling with severe traffic congestion as ongoing Delhi Metro construction and a recent Delhi Jal Board (DJB) project have rendered roads nearly unusable. Residents allege that traffic snarls have stretched for hours, with school buses getting trapped in muddy, dug-up patches and people abandoning vehicles to walk their children to school.
On Monday morning, a school bus was stuck in the mud near a T-junction, sparking massive delays. “People had to leave their cars, walk a kilometer, and take autos to drop their children,” said RWA president of Santushti Flats. She noted that many children missed school, and the same issue repeated in the afternoon with another bus. The head of the RWA of the nearby Saraswati Society, said the Metro work was manageable as residents had adjusted over the past year. However, the DJB project, which tore up part of the road just days ago, made things worse. Though work finished Saturday, the road remains incomplete and dangerous.
“The lack of alternate routes is a major issue,” added resident. Kundra warned that the bottleneck could hinder ambulances during medical emergencies and criticized the absence of traffic police in the area. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), in response, claimed its construction is away from the main carriageway and stated that traffic marshals are deployed at major intersections to maintain flow. The DJB has yet to respond.
Residents are now demanding swift completion of the works and better coordination between agencies to prevent further chaos in the area.
