Delhi is set to witness the development of its much-anticipated Yamuna riverfront, a project that aims to transform the area into an accessible and eco-friendly public space.
As part of the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) broader initiative to rejuvenate a 22-kilometre stretch of the Yamuna river, the riverfront will feature a central piazza, a topiary park, a local shopping centre, and a river promenade, covering an area of 25 hectares. This development is expected to serve as a key feature of the city’s urban and environmental landscape, combining nature with urban amenities.The primary goal of this riverfront project is to increase public access to the river while prioritising environmental sustainability. Unlike riverfront developments in cities such as Ahmedabad, the Delhi riverfront will avoid permanent concrete structures. Officials have stated that only ecologically suitable materials will be used, following the successes of similar materials used in other parts of the Yamuna floodplain.
This careful planning aims to address the unique challenges of the floodplain ecosystem, where the river frequently floods, depositing silt and influencing the development of surrounding areas.The design of the riverfront reflects a growing understanding of the importance of preserving natural spaces while allowing for urban development. The site, which previously housed a bus depot, will now be transformed into a public space that encourages connection with the river. This area has been vacant since 2020 and is being repurposed as part of the ongoing riverfront revitalisation. The project will also include parking areas and pedestrian-friendly zones to ensure the development is functional for both recreation and daily use.
A notable aspect of this initiative is the inclusion of floodplain-specific vegetation along the river, with riverine grasses planted to reduce soil erosion and support the area’s ecological health. Additionally, the project will create water storage depressions to manage excess river water during floods. These measures ensure that the riverfront development remains resilient to flooding, adapting to the river’s natural cycles.The DDA’s riverfront development forms part of a wider 1,660-hectare revitalisation project aimed at transforming the Yamuna into a more accessible and environmentally responsible urban asset. The riverfront will be developed in phases, with unpaved walking and cycling tracks included in each section. By applying lessons learned from previous developments, the DDA is designing the space to be both flood-resilient and inviting for the public.
