Delhi Transport Department Takes Firm Stance on Overage Vehicle Parking

New Delhi: The Delhi Transport Department has announced stringent measures against overage vehicles, mandating that they must not be parked in public spaces under any circumstances. In a public notice issued recently, the department clarified that vehicles found violating this directive by being parked in public areas will face impoundment and subsequent scrapping.

The notice, which covers areas under the jurisdiction of New Delhi Municipal Council, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and Traffic Police, emphasizes that even vehicles possessing a No Objection Certificate (NOC) must be moved out of Delhi within one month of issuance. Failure to comply will result in enforcement action, including impoundment.

Earlier in February, the department addressed complaints from owners whose overage vehicles were impounded, reiterating a complete prohibition on parking such vehicles in residential complex shared spaces, which are categorized as public places.

“Owners are advised to park these vehicles only in private spaces that are solely owned by them, including designated spots within residential complexes which are considered private,” the notice stated.

Under the department’s scrapping policy, owners have the option to obtain an NOC to relocate their vehicle out of Delhi within one year from its expiry date. Post this period, no further NOCs will be issued, compelling owners to either scrap their vehicles at state-authorized facilities or face potential impoundment.

The Delhi Transport Department has already deregistered a substantial 5.5 million overage vehicles in adherence to these guidelines.

This move underscores the department’s commitment to reducing vehicular congestion and pollution in the capital city, aligning with broader environmental and regulatory objectives. It also aims to streamline parking regulations, ensuring public spaces are utilized efficiently while promoting compliance with scrapping policies designed to enhance urban mobility and environmental sustainability.
