Delhi to Restore Kamla Nehru Ridge to Combat Waterlogging

Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has embarked on an ambitious project to restore the Kamla Nehru Ridge’s natural depression by converting it into a water body.

This initiative aims to address chronic waterlogging issues in surrounding areas while revitalising the green lungs that serve several densely populated neighbourhoods, including Kamla Nagar, Malka Ganj, and parts of Delhi University. Following an inspection by senior officials, the project has been given the green light to channel excess rainwater through an engineered network of pipelines into the Ridge’s depression, creating a new eco-friendly water reservoir. The plan aligns with Delhi’s broader goals of enhancing urban water management, groundwater recharge, and expanding green infrastructure to combat climate stress.

The Ridge’s open spaces act as crucial ecological buffers amidst Delhi’s urban sprawl, providing much-needed oxygenation and temperature regulation. However, a sizeable dry depression within the Ridge has long been an underutilised asset. By harnessing excess rainwater from nearby waterlogged zones such as Malka Ganj and Civil Lines, the project promises not only to alleviate surface water accumulation on city streets but also to replenish the Ridge’s groundwater and improve biodiversity. An official familiar with the project explained that the restoration will use large-diameter pipelines, designed to divert rainwater from footpaths and roadways directly into the forested Ridge area. These pipelines will extend several feet inside the Ridge boundary to ensure effective water collection, preventing runoff from overwhelming the city’s drainage systems.

This endeavour builds on earlier successful ecological interventions in Delhi, such as the restoration of the lake at Roshanara Bagh, which significantly reduced local flooding and enhanced community green space. Experts believe that replicating such models in the Kamla Nehru Ridge will support Delhi’s commitments to zero net carbon and climate-resilient urban planning. Beyond water management, the inspection revealed urgent needs for infrastructural repairs within the Ridge. Kachha (unpaved) pathways are being upgraded with porous jute carpeting, an eco-conscious solution that reduces soil erosion while maintaining natural drainage. The restoration also includes repairing boundary walls and preserving historical sites within the Ridge, all while ensuring minimal ecological disturbance. Officials emphasised the importance of pruning overgrown trees, removing dead wood, and clearing hanging wires and redundant cables that pose risks to both the environment and public safety.

Steps have also been outlined to relocate electric poles that obstruct roads, repair manhole covers, and address maintenance of water tapping pits with added secondary covers to prevent contamination. The project’s multi-agency coordination involves the Public Works Department (PWD), urban development authorities, and municipal corporations. Collaboration is deemed essential to fast-track remedial measures, with strict deadlines set to complete all restoration work within seven days to ensure preparedness for the impending monsoon season. The initiative is also a step towards building gender-neutral and equitable urban green spaces. By improving accessibility and safety along walking tracks, the project encourages wider community engagement, especially from women and senior citizens, enhancing the social inclusivity of Delhi’s open areas.

However, the initiative must navigate administrative and ecological challenges, including delays in obtaining forest department permissions and balancing heritage conservation with modern infrastructure needs. Authorities remain committed to ensuring that the Kamla Nehru Ridge emerges as a flagship example of sustainable urban ecosystem restoration. With waterlogging frequently disrupting daily life in many parts of Delhi, this project offers a tangible solution that integrates ecological restoration with pragmatic urban flood management. If successfully executed, it could serve as a replicable blueprint for other metropolitan areas grappling with climate-related water challenges and environmental degradation.
