Delhi to Launch Sustainable Water Taxis on Yamuna

Delhi is set to introduce solar-powered hybrid water taxis along a 4km stretch of the Yamuna River. This initiative, part of a collaboration between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and several Delhi government agencies, aims to offer a sustainable travel experience while promoting recreational activities along the river.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU), which is expected to be signed soon, involves the IWAI, Delhi government’s irrigation and flood control department, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the Delhi Jal Board, and the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). The water taxis will operate between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, upstream of Wazirabad, using solar-powered boats designed to carry between 20 to 30 passengers.
The solar hybrid boats will be equipped with modern amenities such as bio-toilets, life jackets, and public announcement systems to ensure a safe and comfortable ride for passengers.

The project is part of a broader vision to promote sustainable travel along the Yamuna, with a focus on creating a pollution-free and eco-friendly river transport system. In addition to passenger transport, the initiative is expected to boost short-distance travel and recreational activities on the river.IWAI officials revealed that two HDPE jetties will be installed to facilitate smooth ferry operations.

This project aligns with the broader goal of reshaping Delhi’s tourism landscape by providing visitors with a new river cruise experience. The emphasis on solar-powered boats underscores the commitment to reducing carbon footprints and encouraging sustainable practices. The water taxi project, originally envisioned as a longer 16km route, has been scaled down due to environmental concerns raised by authorities. However, the 4km stretch, which is relatively clean, promises to offer an innovative and green solution for both locals and tourists looking for an alternative mode of transport.
