Delhi officials have launched an intensive drive to make the city’s roads pothole-free before the monsoon. The initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to overhaul key arterial roads, with an emphasis on durability and sustainability. During a midnight inspection of the Outer Ring Road construction, officials reviewed the ongoing work and underscored the need for stringent quality control and adherence to deadlines to prevent weather-induced deterioration.
The Rs 12.85 crore project, focused on strengthening a crucial four-kilometre stretch between Madhuban Chowk and Mukarba Chowk, employs advanced road engineering techniques such as dense bitumen concrete and stone matrix asphalt. These materials are designed to enhance road longevity and withstand heavy rainfall. Cold milling and hot recycling methods are also being implemented to optimise the use of existing materials, ensuring efficient resource management while minimising environmental impact. Officials stressed that the ongoing roadwork aligns with the city’s larger goal of developing resilient infrastructure to support its growing urban population.
As part of the project, existing road layers are being carefully removed through precision milling to maintain proper levelling and prevent surface undulations. Enhancements such as thermoplastic paint, glow studs, and median markers are being incorporated to improve visibility, particularly at night. A 50mm thick Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) layer is being laid near elevated flyovers to provide added structural integrity. The project, undertaken by the Public Works Department’s northern zone, reflects a concerted effort to address longstanding civic grievances related to road conditions, which have often led to traffic congestion and accidents during the monsoon season.
The urgency surrounding the road repair initiative stems from mounting public concern over deteriorating road conditions, a key issue in the recently concluded assembly elections. Officials, aware of the electoral repercussions of poor urban management, have intensified inspections and directed teams to ensure timely completion of repair work. More such reviews are expected in the coming weeks, with a sharp focus on addressing road safety, drainage systems, and other critical urban infrastructure. The administration has reiterated its commitment to enhancing road quality and urban mobility, positioning this initiative as a step toward a more sustainable and well-connected city.
