Delhi Relaunches U Special Buses Connecting 67 University Colleges Safely

Delhi has officially relaunched the U-Special bus service for Delhi University students, providing a dedicated, safe, and student-friendly transport option across the city. The initiative, led by Delhi state transport authorities, brings back a nostalgic aspect of campus travel while integrating modern safety and comfort features. A fleet of 100 air-conditioned buses equipped with FM radios, GPS tracking, and panic buttons will operate across 25 routes, ensuring efficient connectivity between North Campus, other DU colleges, and residential areas.

Officials confirmed that the bus service will be scaled up over time, responding to student demand and peak-hour requirements. The U-Special service aims to reduce dependence on private vehicles, contributing to lower carbon emissions while ensuring affordable, equitable travel options for students. Routes have been designed to cover all major Delhi University colleges, ensuring minimal waiting times and streamlined transit across the city. The relaunch comes at a time when student commuting has faced challenges due to overcrowding in regular public transport and rising traffic congestion. State transport experts highlighted that air-conditioned buses with modern safety features significantly enhance passenger security, particularly for female and differently-abled students. Additionally, the use of panic buttons linked to local law enforcement centres will ensure rapid response in emergencies, reflecting a strong focus on sustainable, safe urban mobility.\

City planners emphasised that the service aligns with Delhi’s broader vision of eco-friendly public transportation, targeting a reduction in the city’s vehicular carbon footprint. By integrating real-time tracking and efficient scheduling, the U-Special buses aim to provide punctual and reliable commuting while reducing congestion on city roads. Officials also noted that the initiative could serve as a pilot for future student-specific transport services across other educational institutions in the state.

Authorities warned that weather conditions may impact the service temporarily, as the Indian Meteorological Department forecasts light rain or thundershowers in certain areas. While flood relief measures have been set up in flood-prone zones along the Yamuna, commuters in some isolated pockets may face delays. The transport department has assured students that contingency plans, including alternate routes and schedules, will be in place to mitigate disruptions.

Experts say the initiative not only enhances student convenience but also supports gender-neutral access to safe mobility. The U-Special bus service ensures students from all socio-economic backgrounds can travel comfortably, providing equitable urban mobility solutions. By reducing reliance on private vehicles, the program contributes to Delhi’s commitment to zero net carbon initiatives and sustainable city planning. The relaunch of the U-Special bus network represents a step forward in harmonising safety, sustainability, and convenience for urban commuters. By combining modern technology with student-friendly operations, Delhi authorities are positioning public transport as a reliable, inclusive, and environmentally conscious alternative for city travel.
