Delhi Records Hottest Day in Three Years

Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 42.1°C on Saturday, marking the highest temperature the national capital has experienced in three years.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the last time a higher temperature was recorded was in 2022, when the maximum had reached 43.5°C. The minimum temperature settled at 20.7°C, 3.1 degrees below the seasonal average. Humidity fluctuated between 35% and 15%, contributing to the discomfort felt by residents. In response to the soaring temperatures, the Delhi government has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. The General Administration Department (GAD) issued an order cancelling all leaves for officers at the Junior Engineer (JE) level and above across three key departments—the Delhi Jal Board, Public Works Department (PWD), and Irrigation & Flood Control (I&FC) Department—until September 15. This decision aims to ensure the desilting of drains and the implementation of necessary measures to prevent waterlogging before the monsoon season.

The Directorate of Education (DoE) has also issued guidelines to schools across the capital to strengthen heat safety measures. These directives include prohibiting all outdoor activities during heatwaves, ensuring a continuous supply of potable water, scheduling regular water breaks, and avoiding afternoon assemblies. The DoE emphasized the importance of protecting children from heat-related illnesses, which can be exacerbated by the intense heat and humidity. As the city braces for continued high temperatures, residents are advised to take precautions to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. The IMD has forecasted that the heatwave conditions will persist in the coming days, with temperatures remaining above 40°C in several parts of the city.

The government’s proactive measures reflect a growing recognition of the need to address climate-related challenges and protect vulnerable populations from the adverse effects of extreme weather events. As Delhi continues to grapple with rising temperatures, these initiatives serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of climate change. For more information on heat safety and monsoon preparedness, residents are encouraged to visit the official websites of the Delhi government and the IMD.
