Delhi Readies For Yamuna River Cruise Services Launch In November

Delhi will soon see cruise services launch on the Yamuna River, with operations expected to begin this November. The highly anticipated project will span an eight-kilometre stretch between Wazirabad barrage (Sonia Vihar) and Jagatpur (Shani temple), marking a significant step towards boosting tourism in the national capital. This initiative, announced earlier this year, involves a crucial collaboration among five key agencies, including the Inland Waterways Authority of India, Delhi Development Authority, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation, and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, all of whom have formalized their commitment through a Memorandum of Understanding.

Officials confirm that necessary groundwork, including the construction of a jetty, is proceeding to ensure the city is fully prepared for the launch. The Delhi Development Authority is contributing land for jetty development, while the Irrigation and Flood Control Department will provide navigational aids and crucial shore facilities, including charging infrastructure for the eco-friendly vessels. Initially, two electric-solar hybrid cruises will be deployed, featuring inboard bio-toilets ensuring zero discharge, alongside announcement systems and safety jackets. Operators will be mandated to run a minimum of four trips daily, providing a safe, reliable, and comfortable experience with air-conditioned boats not older than two years.

While ticket pricing is still being finalized, the emphasis remains on promoting sustainable travel and revitalizing the Yamuna. This vision extends to transforming the river’s ghats into vibrant cultural and artistic hubs, mirroring models seen in Varanasi, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ongoing Yamuna cleaning efforts. Despite some criticisms from opposition parties regarding the river’s water quality, authorities are confident in the project’s potential to enhance both recreational opportunities and environmental stewardship.

These eco-friendly cruise services represent a forward-thinking step in urban transport and tourism, promoting sustainable mobility and revitalizing the riverfront. While challenges remain regarding water quality, the initiative underscores a commitment to integrating natural resources into the city’s future.
