Delhi authorities are accelerating the expansion of household PNG Connections as part of a citywide push to strengthen energy access and reduce dependence on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) amid global supply uncertainties. Officials overseeing the programme said the capital aims to add roughly four lakh new PNG Connections, expanding the existing network that currently serves around 14 lakh homes. The proposed expansion would bring the total number of households connected to piped natural gas close to the city’s current distribution capacity, marking a significant step in the transition toward cleaner and more reliable urban energy systems.
The expansion drive is being implemented in coordination with the city’s gas distribution utility and relevant urban infrastructure departments. According to officials familiar with the initiative, the rollout is being treated as a mission-mode programme, with departments instructed to speed up installation processes and expand last-mile connectivity in residential neighbourhoods. Urban energy planners note that piped natural gas offers several advantages over conventional LPG cylinder distribution, particularly in densely populated cities. Once connected to a pipeline network, households receive a continuous gas supply without the logistical challenges of cylinder delivery. This system also reduces transport-related emissions and improves safety through regulated infrastructure and monitoring. Authorities say the expansion of PNG Connections comes at a time when energy security concerns have gained prominence globally. Disruptions in international energy supply chains, particularly in strategic maritime routes used for fuel shipments, have raised questions about the stability of LPG availability. In response, policymakers are increasingly emphasising domestic pipeline-based gas distribution as a more resilient alternative for urban households. A senior official involved in the programme said a detailed roadmap has been prepared to accelerate adoption across Delhi’s residential clusters. The plan includes expanding pipeline infrastructure in areas that currently lack coverage and encouraging households to switch to piped gas through targeted outreach programmes.
Door-to-door awareness campaigns are expected to play a key role in the initiative. Officials say these campaigns will highlight the benefits of PNG Connections, including cost transparency through metered billing, uninterrupted supply, and reduced storage risks compared with LPG cylinders. Energy analysts say expanding PNG networks aligns with broader climate and sustainability objectives for cities. Natural gas burns cleaner than several conventional fuels and produces fewer particulate emissions, making it a transitional option as urban areas gradually move toward lower-carbon energy systems. At the national level, city gas distribution networks have been expanding rapidly in recent years as part of efforts to increase the share of natural gas in India’s energy mix. Urban centres with growing populations and dense housing clusters are seen as priority markets for this infrastructure. For Delhi, improving access to piped gas is also linked to wider urban development goals, including better energy resilience and improved household convenience. Officials say the success of the expansion plan will depend on timely infrastructure development and continued cooperation between city agencies and distribution companies.
If the proposed rollout proceeds as scheduled, the coming months could see a substantial rise in PNG Connections across the capital, bringing a larger share of households into the city’s expanding urban gas network while reducing reliance on cylinder-based fuel supply.
