Delhi Parents Demand Online Classes Amid Severe Air Pollution

Delhi’s air quality continues to worsen as pollution levels reach nearly ‘severe’ levels across multiple city areas, stirring public outcry. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the capital hit 384 at 9 am on Tuesday, nearing the ‘severe’ classification, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The 24-hour AQI average reached 381 by Monday evening, marking one of the highest pollution levels nationwide. The CPCB’s Sameer App, which monitors hourly AQI levels, flagged 13 out of Delhi’s 38 stations in the ‘severe’ zone. Anand Vihar recorded a staggering 448 AQI, followed closely by Jahangirpuri at 440, both crossing the threshold for ‘severe’ pollution levels. These metrics reflect a concerning escalation of air pollution and its impact on public health.

The severe AQI is having a palpable effect on city life, as visibility at the Indira Gandhi International Airport dropped to 1,800 metres, according to the India Meteorological Department. The reduced visibility underscores the extent of smog blanketing Delhi. In response, the city’s Environment Ministry has initiated a comprehensive anti-dust campaign. Officials reported that more than 7,900 sites have been inspected for dust management compliance, with fines totalling ₹63 lakh imposed on construction sites violating dust-control measures. Additionally, 68 anti-smog guns have been installed at strategic locations to mitigate dust pollution, especially at high-rise buildings, as authorities attempt to curb the hazardous smog.

Amid the health risks, parental associations are urging the government to transition schools to online classes, fearing for children’s respiratory well-being. Concerned parents argue that prolonged exposure to the current toxic air could exacerbate health conditions, especially among young students, making physical attendance untenable. Some schools have already responded by cancelling outdoor activities, including morning assemblies, to limit students’ exposure. Parents’ calls for immediate government intervention underscore growing fears over children’s vulnerability to air pollution.

The escalating pollution levels in Delhi spotlight the urgency of sustainable urban planning and environmental action. Addressing sources like open burning, vehicular emissions, and industrial pollutants is critical to making Delhi’s air safer in the long term. With pollution levels regularly climbing to hazardous levels, particularly during winter, the city’s efforts to prioritise sustainability will be essential in protecting public health. The current situation highlights an immediate need for stricter regulations and a shift toward greener urban policies to secure a healthier future for Delhi residents.
