A new 2.5-kilometre tunnel on the Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway is set to open for a limited trial run starting May 29. The tunnel will be accessible daily from 12 PM to 3 PM, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and assess traffic flow dynamics during peak hours.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in collaboration with Delhi and Gurugram traffic police, has conducted thorough inspections to ensure the tunnel’s readiness for public use. This trial phase is a strategic move to monitor and manage traffic patterns, with the potential for extended operational hours based on the trial’s success. The tunnel is part of the larger Dwarka Expressway project, a 29-kilometre, eight-lane elevated highway designed to improve connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram. Once fully operational, the expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, especially for commuters from Manesar, Sohna, and Jaipur.
To ensure safety and smooth traffic flow during the trial period, certain vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, tractors with trolleys, and water or gas tankers, will be restricted from using the tunnel. These measures are intended to prevent delays and maintain consistent traffic speeds within the tunnel. The Dwarka Expressway project, with an estimated cost of ₹9,000 crore, is a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at decongesting the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and enhancing regional connectivity. The expressway features 23 kilometres of elevated roads and 4 kilometres of underground tunnels, including the newly opened 2.5-kilometre tunnel.
This development is a step forward in creating sustainable and efficient urban transport systems, aligning with broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly infrastructure. The successful implementation of the tunnel trial will pave the way for improved traffic management and commuter experience in the region.
