Delhi NCR Receives Monsoon Relief Amid Heatwave

Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced a welcome respite from the relentless heatwave as sudden rainfall and thunderstorms swept across the region on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The unexpected weather change brought temperatures down significantly, alleviating the discomfort caused by the prolonged heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Delhi NCR, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h.

The storm system was intensified by moisture-laden winds from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Wind gusts reached 79 km/h in Safdarjung and 72 km/h in Palam, causing significant damage in several areas. Trees were uprooted, hoardings were blown over, and traffic was severely affected, particularly in parts of central and south Delhi and in the NCR. Waterlogging in low-lying areas led to slow-moving traffic and minor accidents, further complicating the evening rush hour. The downpour led to a significant drop in temperatures, providing much-needed relief to residents. Delhi’s temperature fell from 36.2°C in the afternoon to 27.2°C by evening, following two distinct rain spells. Humidity levels ranged from 59% to 98%, and the city’s air quality improved slightly with an AQI of 104.

Despite the relief, the storm caused disruptions in air travel. At least 14 flights were diverted, and approximately 400 others experienced delays due to poor visibility and strong crosswinds. The IMD issued an orange alert for Delhi, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. The forecast included moderate rainfall and thundersqualls, with wind speeds expected to range between 50 to 60 km/h, particularly during the night. The IMD’s alert highlighted the need for caution and preparedness among residents and authorities due to the potential for disruption and hazards associated with these weather events. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors during intense weather spells and to report fallen trees or power disruptions to local helplines.

As the monsoon season approaches, the IMD has forecasted that the temperature this week will range between 33°C and 36°C during the daytime, while nighttime temperatures will range between 25°C and 29°C. Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds ranging from 40–60 km/h, is expected to continue throughout the evening, further extending relief to the region. The sudden change in weather serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of climate patterns and the importance of preparedness in urban planning and infrastructure development. As cities like Delhi continue to grapple with the challenges posed by climate change, it becomes increasingly crucial to invest in resilient infrastructure and sustainable urban planning to mitigate the impacts of such extreme weather events.
