Delhi NCR Faces Heavy Rain And Thunderstorms As IMD Issues Orange Alert

Residents across Delhi-NCR woke to a stormy Tuesday morning as overnight rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms swept through the region, bringing temporary relief from the October heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the capital, warning of continued light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder and wind gusts of up to 40 kmph.

The wet spell, triggered by a Western Disturbance, began on Monday afternoon and persisted intermittently into the early hours of Tuesday. At 2:30 AM, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 21.8°C with humidity levels at 98%, creating a misty and still atmosphere across the city. All districts in Delhi were placed under the orange alert, while Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh received similar warnings, and Gurugram and Faridabad in Haryana were under a yellow alert. Officials from the IMD highlighted that the minimum temperatures are expected to remain near seasonal averages, whereas daytime highs could exceed the usual range by 1–2°C. Visual inspections and reports from Indira Gandhi International Airport confirmed light showers, while widespread rainfall affected Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, creating waterlogged streets in low-lying areas.

Wind patterns are expected to shift gradually, with north-northeast surface winds reaching 15 kmph during the morning and easing in the afternoon. By night, easterly winds will taper below 10 kmph, shifting to the southeast at around 8 kmph or less. Forecasts indicate partly cloudy skies on Wednesday, with temperatures ranging from 31–33°C during the day and 20–22°C at night. Thursday is expected to remain mainly clear, maintaining similar temperature ranges. The heavy showers caused temporary disruptions, with certain streets experiencing waterlogging and localized flooding, adding pressure on civic drainage infrastructure. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution, particularly while commuting, and to avoid low-lying areas prone to water accumulation. Traffic police have been deployed across key points to manage congestion and respond swiftly to emergencies.

Experts emphasised that while the rainfall provides a brief respite from rising heat, it also underscores the need for sustainable urban planning. Improved drainage systems, flood-resilient infrastructure, and eco-friendly city measures are crucial to minimise the impact of such intense weather events in the future. The IMD forecasts that the wet spell will ease by Wednesday, bringing clearer skies and stabilising conditions for Delhi-NCR. Residents are advised to stay updated through official weather alerts and exercise caution during ongoing rainfall and wind activity.
