Delhi NCR Earthquake 4.0 Magnitude Tremors Shake National Capital

On the morning of February 17, 2025, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake rattled the Delhi NCR region, leaving residents in panic as tremors were strongly felt across the capital and nearby areas. The earthquake struck at 5:36 am, with the epicentre located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. This unexpected seismic event jolted the region, with tremors spreading across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake’s magnitude was 4.0, with a shallow depth of just five kilometres, which contributed to the intensity of the tremors. Many residents, especially in high-rise buildings, rushed outside in fear as the shaking was particularly strong. Numerous videos circulated on social media, showing objects inside homes shaking and residents sharing their experiences. In one post, a woman from Noida, who was on a morning walk, recalled how she didn’t feel the tremors strongly at first, but noted the rush of people outside as soon as they realised the quake’s severity.

The incident was alarming enough for local authorities to issue emergency helplines, with Delhi Police urging residents to dial “112” for urgent assistance. The tremors were so intense that even passengers at New Delhi Railway Station were startled, with many rushing to the streets in fear. One passenger described the shaking as feeling like a “train running underground.” Prominent political figures also took to social media to express their concern and offer reassurance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted urging everyone to stay calm and be alert for possible aftershocks, while Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other local leaders also shared their thoughts, praying for the safety of all citizens. In addition to the widespread reactions from residents and officials, many users on social media described the earthquake as one of the strongest they had ever felt. One user on X (formerly Twitter) referred to the earthquake as “the most insane earthquake I’ve ever felt.”

Although the earthquake’s magnitude was relatively modest, its proximity to the densely populated areas of Delhi and its shallow depth resulted in stronger-than-expected tremors. Such events have a unique impact on cities like Delhi, which lie in a seismically active zone due to the nearby faults and the region’s proximity to the seismically active Himalayas. Delhi and its surrounding areas, including Noida and Ghaziabad, lie in an active seismic zone. This includes faults like the Delhi-Haridwar ridge and Moradabad fault, both of which increase the risk of tremors in the region. Smaller earthquakes are not uncommon in the area, and it is crucial for residents to stay vigilant, particularly in the aftermath of a seismic event.

Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties from the earthquake, though authorities remain on high alert for potential aftershocks. The situation is being closely monitored, and residents are advised to remain calm and take necessary safety precautions. As the day progresses, Delhi NCR residents are left to reflect on the strength of the tremors that shook their morning routine. With a combination of surprise, fear, and a call for caution, the earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity, urging both authorities and residents to remain prepared for such events in the future.
