Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma visited Tughlakabad village on Tuesday to inspect the ongoing water shortage and assured residents that swift steps would be taken to restore supply.
Amid the growing crisis, Verma accused the Punjab government and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of deliberately reducing water flow to the national capital. In a sharp political attack, Verma alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), following its electoral defeat in Delhi, was retaliating by choking water supplies from Punjab. “After losing Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal has moved to Punjab, where he is now taking revenge on the people of Delhi by cutting off their water supply,” the minister told reporters during his visit. According to Verma, Delhi is receiving 15 cusecs less water daily, with the shortfall traced to decisions made by the Bhakra Beas Management Board. He claimed the board had cut down water release to Haryana, indirectly affecting Delhi’s water supply.
The minister reassured Tughlakabad residents that the issue is being addressed on priority. “We are committed to providing uninterrupted water supply to every corner of Delhi, and Tughlakabad will not be left behind,” he stated. Beyond the immediate water shortage, Verma also touched on monsoon preparedness and civic coordination. On Monday, he visited the NDMC control room to review readiness for the upcoming rainy season. He praised the coordination between the city’s governing bodies — NDMC, MCD, and the Delhi government — all under the same political leadership. “During the recent rains, we received a high volume of calls at the complaint centre. We now plan to establish a single command centre uniting NDMC, MCD, PWD, DDA, and the Delhi Jal Board to improve response times and coordination,” he explained. To enhance public access and efficiency, Verma also announced plans to roll out a unified helpline number for citizens to report issues such as waterlogging and service disruptions during the monsoon.
As the capital braces for rising summer temperatures and the monsoon season ahead, the government is under pressure to ensure that infrastructure and essential services remain uninterrupted. While political blame games continue over water scarcity, residents of areas like Tughlakabad await prompt solutions on the ground.
