The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has unveiled a major expansion plan to extend platforms at 32 stations across its network, a move aimed at easing rush-hour congestion and ensuring safer, more comfortable journeys for millions of commuters. The initiative marks a key step in DMRC’s broader strategy to modernise its infrastructure and prepare for the growing mobility needs of Delhi’s fast-expanding population.
According to senior DMRC officials, the platform extensions will primarily cover stations on the Blue Line, including Noida Sector 15, 16, 18, Golf Course, and Noida City Centre, as well as Laxmi Nagar, Nirman Vihar, and Preet Vihar. These are among the busiest stations during peak hours, where overcrowding has been a persistent challenge. Once completed, the extended platforms will be able to accommodate longer trains, enabling a higher passenger capacity and reducing delays during boarding and deboarding.
The ₹5.71 crore project tender was floated on 24 October, with technical bids due by 17 November. Officials confirmed that work will commence soon after the bidding process, with an estimated completion timeline of one year. An online pre-bid meeting is scheduled for 31 October to address queries from interested contractors. This timeline aligns with DMRC’s ongoing infrastructure upgrade plan designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and commuter convenience.
DMRC’s network currently spans ten operational lines and two rapid transit corridors, serving nearly 65 lakh passengers daily. The Blue Line remains the most heavily used, running over 50 kilometres from Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida Electronic City and branching out to Vaishali. The line not only connects critical residential and commercial hubs but also integrates with multiple interchange points, making it central to Delhi’s urban mobility ecosystem.Officials highlighted that the upcoming platform extensions will make a tangible difference to the commuter experience. The longer platforms will allow for better passenger dispersion, reducing the risk of crowd surges and accidents during rush hours. The move is also expected to streamline train operations, allowing for quicker turnaround times and improved punctuality.
