The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is poised to commence construction on two new metro corridors by the end of this year, following recent approvals from the Centre. These new corridors, part of Phase IV of the Delhi Metro expansion, will span a combined length of 20.70 kilometres and significantly enhance connectivity in South and Central Delhi.
The first corridor will run from Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block, while the second will connect Indraprastha to Inderlok. These lines are expected to integrate seamlessly into the existing metro network, improving transit options for Delhi residents. The DMRC has accelerated preliminary activities, including route alignments and necessary surveys, and is currently working on securing the requisite statutory clearances from various departments.
A senior DMRC official stated, “We are in the process of obtaining statutory clearances, including land acquisition and forest permissions. The planning and tendering for civil works are progressing rapidly. Our aim is to initiate construction by the end of this year.” The Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block corridor will traverse several key locations such as Andrews Ganj, Greater Kailash 1, Chirag Dilli, Pushpa Bhawan, Pushp Vihar, Saket District Centre, and Saket G Block. This route is anticipated to provide substantial relief to commuters in these bustling areas by offering an efficient and reliable transport alternative.
Similarly, the Indraprastha to Inderlok corridor will enhance connectivity to significant landmarks including the Delhi Secretariat, Sarai Rohilla railway station, and Lok Nayak hospital. Additional stations along this 12-kilometre stretch will serve New Delhi, Nabi Karim, Dilli Gate, Daya Basti, and Ajmal Khan Park, with five interchange points providing seamless transfers to existing metro lines: Blue Line (Delhi to Noida/Vaishali), Pink Line (Majlis Park to Maujpur), Magenta Line (Botanical Garden to Janakpuri), Yellow Line (Gurgaon to Samaypur Badli), and Red Line (Rithala to Ghaziabad New Bus Adda).
The South Delhi corridor will also feature interchange facilities with the Yellow, Magenta, Pink, and Violet lines, further integrating the metro network and facilitating smoother transit across the city. These expansions are part of DMRC’s ongoing efforts to enhance urban mobility and reduce congestion in the capital. The strategic placement of these corridors is expected to provide significant socio-economic benefits, reducing travel time and promoting the use of public transport.
As the DMRC moves towards the construction phase, the timely acquisition of clearances and land will be critical to adhering to the project timelines. The development of these new metro lines underscores the importance of sustainable and efficient urban transport solutions in supporting Delhi’s growth and improving the quality of life for its residents. With construction slated to begin by year-end, these projects represent a significant step forward in the city’s transportation infrastructure, promising to deliver substantial improvements in connectivity and convenience for daily commuters.
