Delhi Metro Red Line Delayed Due to Technical Snag Full Service Resumed
Delhi, February 7, 2025 – Delhi Metro services on the Red Line experienced a temporary disruption on Friday morning, resulting from a technical issue between Netaji Subhash Place and Tis Hazari. While the delay was initially reported as affecting just this short stretch, commuters across the entire Red Line felt the impact, with trains running at slower speeds for almost an hour.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) addressed the issue promptly, informing passengers about the delay. At 9:45 AM, DMRC posted an update on the social media platform X, confirming the delay on the affected section and apologising for the inconvenience caused. Passengers were advised to consider alternative routes or lines during the delay. Shortly after, a follow-up tweet at 10:00 AM confirmed that normal services had resumed, and the technical issue had been resolved. However, many passengers voiced their concerns about the extended duration of the delay, which appeared to affect services more widely than initially anticipated. One commuter, Aniket Kumar, tweeted that the problem had been ongoing since 9 AM and thanked DMRC for sharing the update. Another passenger, Jay Singh, shared his frustration, describing how the train had been stationary at Shaheed Sthal station for nearly 30 minutes while waiting for updates on the situation.
While DMRC’s prompt updates helped manage the information flow, passengers expressed dissatisfaction with the prolonged delays. Several commuters reported trains running slower than usual across the Red Line, from Shaheed Sthal in Ghaziabad to Rithala in North Delhi. The Red Line, which is approximately 33 kilometres long, serves 29 stations and is one of the oldest operational lines of the Delhi Metro. It has been in service since 2002 and remains one of the busiest metro routes in the city, connecting the eastern and northern parts of Delhi and extending into Uttar Pradesh. Commuters who rely on the Red Line for daily travel noted the ripple effects of the delay, with some stations experiencing overcrowding as passengers attempted to board already crowded trains. In the midst of the ongoing disruption, the inconvenience caused to those travelling during peak hours was evident.
The cause of the technical snag remains unclear, with no specific details provided by DMRC. However, technical issues are not uncommon in metro systems, especially on older lines. While DMRC’s swift response to resolve the problem helped minimise the disruption, it raised concerns among commuters about the vulnerability of older infrastructure to unexpected delays. As Delhi’s metro system continues to grow, maintaining the efficiency and reliability of services on older lines like the Red Line will be essential.
