Delhi Metro Prioritizes Special Passengers for Smoother Security Checks

The Delhi Metro has introduced a dedicated priority-frisking initiative for special category passengers.

Effective Sunday, this new measure aims to provide a smoother and more convenient security check experience for specially-abled individuals, pregnant women, women travelling with infants, senior citizens, and injured persons. This proactive step by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) underscores its commitment to ensuring equitable access and a hassle-free journey for all, thereby contributing to the vision of truly gender-neutral and accessible cities.

Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director, Corporate Communications, DMRC, articulated the core objective of this initiative: “The objective of this initiative is to provide a smooth and hassle-free travel experience for these passengers, ensuring they can move through security checks with ease and convenience.” He further emphasised that “By implementing priority frisking, DMRC reaffirms its commitment to making the metro system more accessible, inclusive, and empathetic for all.” This move sets a commendable precedent for public transportation networks across the nation, showcasing a deep understanding of diverse passenger needs.

The implementation of this priority system is a collaborative effort, with DMRC working in close coordination with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and other security personnel. Necessary guidelines are being issued to ensure a seamless experience, while security personnel may, in instances of doubt regarding eligibility, request relevant documents for verification. This balanced approach ensures that while priority is granted, the integrity of security protocols is maintained, ensuring safety for all commuters.

The Delhi Metro, already the second-oldest and longest metro network in the country spanning nearly 400 kilometres, has a long-standing commitment to accessibility. DMRC officials highlighted existing provisions such as reserved seating, tactile paths for visually impaired individuals, the availability of wheelchairs, and other support systems designed to facilitate a seamless travel experience for ‘divyangs’ (persons with disabilities) and senior citizens. This new priority frisking initiative builds upon these established foundations, further enhancing the user experience for vulnerable populations.

This progressive step by the Delhi Metro goes beyond mere operational efficiency; it is a profound statement of social responsibility. By consciously addressing the specific needs of these passenger groups, DMRC is not only improving their immediate travel experience but also advocating for a broader societal shift towards greater empathy and consideration for those who require additional support. In the context of building modern, sustainable cities, ensuring equitable access to public infrastructure is paramount. This initiative aligns perfectly with the goals of creating urban centres where mobility is unhindered by physical or social barriers, allowing every individual to participate fully in city life. The Delhi Metro’s ongoing efforts solidify its position as a model for public transportation systems, demonstrating that effective urban planning must inherently integrate principles of inclusivity and compassion.
