Delhi Metro Plans Dynamic Coach System for Phase 4 Expansion

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to introduce a groundbreaking approach to coach deployment in its upcoming Phase 4 expansion, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and optimize passenger capacity across varying traffic conditions.

Under the proposed system, DMRC plans to implement a flexible arrangement where the number of coaches in each train can be adjusted dynamically based on real-time passenger demands. This innovative strategy involves attaching or detaching coaches as per the footfall intensity during different times of the day. Peak hours will see trains operating with up to six coaches to accommodate high passenger volumes efficiently, while off-peak hours may witness trains operating with as few as three to four coaches to minimize operational costs and energy consumption.

According to the principal executive director of corporate communications at DMRC, this approach will ensure optimal utilization of resources across the 65.2km Phase 4 network, which spans three corridors and includes a total of 45 stations. These corridors are the Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg extension (28.92km), Majlis Park-Maujpur extension (12.55km), and the new Aerocity-Tughlakabad Golden Line (23.62km). Significantly, DMRC has achieved significant milestones in the Phase 4 construction, with over 50% completion across all corridors and more than 80% completion on the Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor, anticipated to open by mid-2025. The remaining sections, Janakpuri West-RK Ashram and Aerocity-Tughlakabad, are expected to commence operations by mid-2026, officials confirmed.

In preparation for the expanded network, Alstom, the renowned rolling stock manufacturer, is slated to produce 52 new Metropolis train sets, each comprising six cars tailored for Phase 4 requirements. These trains will boast enhanced operational capabilities, including speeds of up to 95 km/hr and advanced acceleration and deceleration features. Moreover, they will be compatible with potential future upgrades towards driverless operations, similar to existing lines under Phase 3 such as the Pink and Magenta Lines.

DMRC’s strategic adoption of a flexible coach system underscores its commitment to delivering efficient and sustainable urban transport solutions amidst Delhi’s burgeoning commuter demands. As the Phase 4 project progresses, stakeholders anticipate heightened connectivity and enhanced passenger experiences across the expanding metro network.
